The countdown is on. In a number of days I will depart England and begin a mammoth journey with the aim, as stated, of exploring Asia, India and myself. That line has to be credited to Ricky Gervais’ toe curling creation David Brent. Brent, when creepily interviewing for a new PA, fishes for information about the female interviewee’s marital status. Anyone who’s seen it will know what I’m talking about. Superb.
Anyway, back to the travelling. I have recently took voluntary redundancy from my last job and am going to hopefully fulfill a lifelong ambition of seeing a bit more of the world. I say hopefully, because life happens doesn’t it? I have little to no control over many things which could change the course of my journey and impact on life. However if all goes to plan, I will see and experience life in the following countries; United Arab Emirates, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Indonesia and India. I am truly blessed to have been presented with the opportunity to embark on such an adventure.
Since booking the flights, I have had an array of emotions and feelings. Excited to see so many new place and experience different cultures. Scared that I’m going to get lost in the middle of nowhere and be unable to find my way. Sad that I’ll miss my friends and family…..and omelettes from my local eaterie. But to quote David Brent again, ‘I have been given an opportunity, that would literally be a sin to waste.’ So I shall ride with the feelings presenting themselves and go forth on the expedition. It’ll be an experience so they say.
During my time away, I aim to document the journey. It would be wonderful if you join me via the World Wide Web. Feel free to leave a comment and follow me on Twitter (@iammatthoughton) and Instagram (@iammatty_85). Before I leave, I have to finalise my route and get visas sorted, as well as accommodation for the first few nights in Bangkok to ensure I’ve got a base and am settled before heading north.
